Tackling Utah Food Deserts
No Car, No Groceries
Food deserts are directly linked to lack of transportation. Meaning that if someone doesn’t have a car or doesn’t live within reasonable distance to a supermarket, they are stuck eating whatever is closest: fast food restaurants, gas stations, convenience stores. Which are not in short supply.
Junk Food Culture
When a gas station convenience store is the only thing someone has access to, they no longer have the option of fresh produce. They are missing out on foods with high nutritional value. They become subject to our quick and easy “junk food culture”.
Inconvenient Prices
Convenience stores at gas stations are every convenient in a snap, but the customers pay premium prices for that. Convenience store prices are almost always significantly higher than the prices at a grocery store.
Challenge
One of the biggest problems in food deserts is lack of transportation, which means that people don’t have a car, public transportation doesn’t take them near a grocery store, or a grocery store is not within reasonable distance. All that is available is junk food found at fast food chains or gas station convenient stores. These problems are often found in low income areas.
Solution
The solution is simple. Find a way to bring the grocery to food deserts. It is to make fresh produce available in food deserts. To provide it on a consistent and reliable schedule so the patrons have access to nutritious food all year round. In addition, a solution is to offer as-needed discounts for those who need the extra assistance.
Fresh, Local, Simple
Crop Drop is a non profit company based out of Utah that serves families who live in Northern Utah food deserts. Their mission is to unite and strengthen our community by making fresh produce available to those who don’t have reasonable access. They provide a traveling food pantry available to all and offer reduced-price and free food benefits for those families that are in need.

Packaging Design
Multipurposed
The packaging is designed to not only help shoppers transport their produce home but also help them learn how to properly store their items while giving them ideas of new produce to look for and try. Each piece’s color helps identify which items go in each piece.
Sustainable
Proper storage of produce causes each item to last longer. These grocery bags are designed to not only transport vegetables but also to store produce. Each bag has the accurate ventilation and material to assist in the produce staying ripe as long as possible.

Your Supermarket (minus the commute).
The goal of this ad is to inform those in food deserts that Crop Drop gives them easy, convenient access to fresh produce and that they do have an easy and consistent way to get produce.
Bus Stop Shelter
Our audience are those who don’t live near supermarkets and are low income. Many of these families regularly see and use public transportation. For this reason, the ad campaign will be located on the side of a bus stop shelter. Where it can be seen by those who use the bus stop and by those driving by.
